Between Tuesday and Thursday last week (7-9 April), a Tillicoultry church’s rear garden and play area was vandalised on two occasions.

The Advertiser understands The Congregational Church, on the town’s High Street, was targeted by two vandals who caused almost £900 worth of damage in the rear, grassed area where members’ children often play.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police in Tillicoultry are investigating following a report of vandalism to a church in the High Street.

“The incident occurred between Tuesday, 7 April, and Thursday, 9 April, 2015. The damage occurred in a garden area adjacent to the church. Items damaged include children’s toys and two wooden benches.

“Enquires are ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident should contact Police Scotland on 101.” Two young males, who are thought to be between the ages of 11 and 15, were seen in the area by neighbours, apparently causing damage. One was described as having short red/auburn hair, while the other one had collar length black hair.

The church pastor discovered a number of broken play items strewn all across the grass with a trampoline overturned. Two plastic garden chairs and tables were smashed to pieces and a children’s slide and jungle gym was also broken into a number of parts.

Two wooden benches were also smashed and the stone wall surrounding the play area was also damaged.

The church’s Pastor, Peter McCool, told the Advertiser that he believes the incident happened on Tuesday and Thursday and that the vandals were young boys who were bored during the Easter school break and wanted to annoy people. He said: “The [two damaged] benches have been there for a long time and [the fact that they have been vandalised] was a shame.” Those with information can call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where anonymity will be maintained.
