Clackmannanshire Disability Awareness Group last week received £9600 in funding from the Scottish Government and the Big Lottery Fund for a nature project at Gartmorn Dam.

The group was amongst 19 community led projects sharing in a boost of around £128,000 from the Communities and Families Fund aimed at giving the country’s children the best start in life.

The grants were announced last Thursday (25 June) and Mike Trevett, of Clackmannanshire DAG, told the Advertiser that the funding is “very helpful” for the group and it “validates all the work” that it has been doing for the past two years.

DAG represents people with disabilities around the Wee County and the new project, located at the Sunken Garden at the dam, will aim to work with young disabled children and their parents.

The project will work in close partnership with, but not exclusively, pupils from nearby Deerpark Primary and Lochies Schools.

Fiona McLeod, acting minister for Children and Young People, said: “Since its launch in 2012, the Communities and Families Fund has funded a wide range of activities to support children and families across Scotland.

“This joint venture with the Big Lottery Fund has been a resounding success by providing resources for groups working directly with children and families in communities. The Fund is now in its last year so I would encourage community groups to take this opportunity to apply for funding.” Maureen McGinn, chair of the Big Lottery Fund Scotland Committee, added: “Today’s Communities and Families awards give an insight into the wide range of inspiring projects which are improving the lives of children across the country.

“They include initiatives bringing families together through creative art; and others supporting young parents to volunteer in their communities.

“We’re keen to hear from other groups across the country which could also benefit from this funding. Full details of our simple application process can be found on our website biglotteryfund.org.uk/scotland or why not call us on 0300 123 7100 to discuss your idea.” To get in touch with Clackmannanshire Disability Awareness Group call 01259 272 018.
