CHRISTINE CALDER from Tullibody spoke to the Advertiser to talk about her work in the community after she was shortlisted for the Clackmannanshire Citizen of the Year Award 2014.

The 71-year-old is a founding member of the Tullibody History Group in 2001 and played a key part in establishing the village’s Heritage Centre in 2002.

She prefers to stay in the shadows and said it was a bit “embarrassing” being nominated. Christine said: “I’m a person who tends to keep in the background and I don’t go around flaunting what I do. I just get on with it.” A friend from Buckie nominated her after she saw the amount of work she put into historical research there.

Christine said: “She must have seen [the awards] on Facebook and then she texted me saying ‘I’ve nominated you’ and I thought: ‘Oh God’.” But she added: “It is very nice to be recognised for the work that you do, because you can go as an unsung hero all your life, [but it is nice for] somebody to actually recognise you.” Christine was a district nurse in the area from 1980, she was on Abercromby Primary’s School Board and she is also founder and director of Tullibody Healthy Living Initiative. In addition, she is on the Delph Pond Forum.

Christine said: “We’ve done quite a bit of work around the Delph Pond trying to preserve some green space in Tullibody. It is quite difficult because they keep building on every square inch.

“I think things are very exciting when they have never been done before.”
