An Education Scotland inspection at Abercromby Primary School and Nursery Class found that the school is “good” in many areas, but there are important ways in which the curriculum needs to be improved.

The school was visited by inspectors in May and a report was published yesterday (25 August), highlighting that the children are friendly and polite as well as that staff are committed to developing a caring and nurturing establishment.

However, a number of areas of improvement were also identified by inspectors, such as the requirement to meet all children’s learning needs in classes, develop the curriculum to raise attainment and ensure that self evaluation is leading to well-paced change and consistency in children’s experiences in classrooms.

Councillor Ellen Forson, education convener at Clackmannanshire Council, said: “We have the highest ambitions for the young people attending all our schools, including Abercromby.

“While the inspectors have reported that they are satisfied with a number of areas in the school, I am also very aware that they have highlighted other things which must be improved, including the development of the curriculum in the school.

“The Education Service is already working with the school to plan and deliver improvements in the areas which have been highlighted for attention.

“They are also working to deliver an ambitious improvement plan across all our schools to raise the performance and learning outcomes of young people, where Clackmannanshire is one of the first local authorities to benefit from the Scottish Attainment Challenge funding from the Scottish Government.

“We are determined to support the school to make these improvements, working with partners at Education Scotland to ensure that everything possible is done to ensure that the young people at Abercromby have every support to reach their full potential.” To view the full report, visit educationscotland.gov.uk and search for Abercromby Primary School.
