St Bernadette’s Roman Catholic Primary School is celebrating the success of achieving its Third Green Flag.

The raising of the Third Green Flag coincides with Pope Francis’ World Day of Prayer for the ‘Care for Creation’.

St Bernadette’s achieved the flag in June 2015, and the focus was on reducing their electricity, litter and food, as well as helping the environment.

Pupils were involved in reducing electricity in line with Clackmannanshire Council’s Energy Strategy, and by reducing emissions.

This was done by switching all appliances off when they were not used. The children took part in ‘Switch Off Fortnight’, and ‘Say Goodbye to Standby’, and ran audits throughout the school.

The pupils kept their school grounds clean and tidy with daily litter picks, while primary 2/3 collected their litter and made graphs of the litter they found in the playground.

In addition, youngsters learned about food miles and how far some of the food they eat travels by plane. They brought in packaging from home and calculated where it came from and looked at the carbon footprint.

They also took part in ‘One Planet Picnic’, using local fresh produce, and made some delicious recipes. The Tullibody Community Garden also fitted into this.

Headteacher Nuala McElroy said: “On this Word Day of Prayer that Pope Francis has dedicated to Care for Creation, it is fantastic that we can celebrate the achievement of children, staff and parents in attaining our third Green Flag. We are very proud of everyone who has contributed to this.”
