AN EMERGING Tullibody athlete has been crowned one of the UK's top boxers after winning a silver medal at the annual GB Tri-nations Boxing Championships.

Billie Denholm, an NQ sports coaching student at Forth Valley College, is currently the UK No.2 in the female youth fly weight category (51kg) after competing at the event was held in Sheffield recently.

The 16-year-old took part in two fights – winning one and losing the other – to secure the silver medal.

Billie was one of only 11 youth athletes to represent Scotland at the competition and was the first time she had fought at the event.

She has been boxing for just over two years and trains every week at Jonesy's Boxing Club in Plean.

The youngster said: "It was really exciting to take part in a UK wide competition. It was a buzz to be representing Scotland. I was disappointed not to win gold but there's always next time.

"I really enjoy boxing; it's great to be so dedicated to something. It also ties in nicely with my sports studies.

"I'm getting coaching experience at my boxing club and currently lead the kids' class with some support from a senior assistant.

"I'm also progressing to the HND in fitness, health and exercise next year where I'll be learning lots about exercise, fitness plans and nutrition – knowledge that will also really benefit my boxing career."

Billie is currently looking for sponsors and anyone interested is asked to email billie1905@hotmail.co.uk or call 07479 964 251.
