Dear Editor I note that the mega-wealthy Euro lottery winners, Colin and Christine Weir, think it ‘strange’ that anyone should question the fact that they donated cash to the SNP to further its aim of breaking up the UK.

This is because Scottish independence has always been a priority of the Weirs and is a reasonable position to take.

However since the sum involved was, literally, a fortune, perhaps it is in fact a trifle strange and not only strange, but possibly sinister, since it could be construed that they are trying to impose their political ideology upon the rest of the country by means of their immense fortune.

That said, they are quite correct when the say that they want to see the country still acting with unity after the referendum, presumably irrespective of the result.

The sad fact is that the referendum campaign has been one of the most vindictive, negative, spiteful, divisive and abhorrent examples of the political process I have seen in many years.

The rhetoric used in previous attempt at independence (yes, I was there too) does not even come close to what is happening now.

The disgraceful television so-called ‘debate’ between deputy first minister Mrs Nicola Murrell and Ms Johan Lamont was an absolutely disgraceful disservice to Scotland and is typical of how the whole process is rapidly disintegrating.

I am absolutely for the Better Together campaign and have been since the start, not because I am anti-independence per se, but because I honestly believe that the kind of Scottish Nirvanic socialist state of milk and honey as promoted by the SNP is both unachievable and ultimately doomed to failure (look at what is happening in Europe now) and the process will be both protracted and painful.

The end result will be that the only people unaffected are the politicians and of course wealthy people like the Weirs.
