Dear Editor Tom Adam’s letter (Wed 7 May Advertiser) talks of the referendum as “a leap in the dark” and a belief that “unity is strength”.

I would suggest the dark period has been around since long before the start of the referendum debate and I can only support the “unity is strength” belief, where it is used for the common good.

The unity with Westminster brought us to an illegal war in Iraq not to mention Afghanistan. The unity with Westminster has failed to address the West Lothian question allowing Gordon Banks and other MPs living in Scotland to vote with impunity on English matters. That he and others do so, is indicative of just how dark things are.

Is Scottish Government too small to survive and thrive? Personally I don’t think so but I am not complacent about the need for more local democracy and responsibility.

If we put the question: “Is Westminster too big to fail?”, the evidence of the fall out from the failure of the Royal Bank of Scotland is that no institution should be allowed to be too big to fail as it simply perpetuates the same old same old.

Westminster’s failures are boundless, they have lost thousands of people the chance to work in decent jobs, loaded the country with trillions of debt, and through their idea of “unity” they continue to promote to global institutions politicians who have failed the people at home.

Yours sincerely Daphne Hamilton Stanton Avenue Alloa FK10 1NE
