Dear Editor What an interesting weekend I have just had, first there was Labour leadership hopeful Neil Findlay on the Andrew Marr Show telling us that it’s already Labour policy in Scotland to oppose the renewal of Trident, now I wonder if any of our Labour friends within this constituency could tell us if that’s true and also if they support the idea.

I suppose we can take it that Mr Findlay actually means that he is opposed to nuclear weapons within Scotland altogether and not just that he and others just want us to hang on to the old ones; now far be it from me to try and untangle the web which is Scottish Labour/British Labour nuclear policy, which is why I would like some of the local comrades to have a go at explaining it for us.

Just to add to my interest, I was referred to a site called Labourlist – it can be found at Labourlist.org – and I was interested in the list of supporters it gave for those running for the various Labour leadership posts, mind you it’s a pity the local ones mentioned didn’t see fit to tell other locals through the Advertiser first. However the only local Labour Councillor it mentioned was Kathleen Martin who apparently is voting for Jim Murphy for Leader and Kezia Dugdale for deputy, as is the local Labour constituency party.

Now what’s of real interest to me hear of course is that Mr Murphy’s views on nuclear weapons are well known, as he put it in the NEW STATESMAN no less.

Jim Murphy: Labour is sticking with Trident The shadow defence secretary quashes speculation: “We’re not a unilateralist party and we’re not about to become a unilateralist party.” So do we take it that local Labourites, especially those who are of Councillor rank or above – actually agree with Mr Murphy? Perhaps they will tell us sometime!

Yours sincerely Jim Mitchell Sauchie
