Just as I believe the founding father of the Labour Party, Keir Hardie, would have undoubtedly supported independence for Scotland, more and more Labour supporters – including senior members of the Labour Party and Labour politicians – are lending their support to the Yes Campaign. A poll published last week shows that more than 40% of Labour supporters from 2010 intend to vote Yes. I believe this is because an independent Scottish government would have the ability to offer the people of Scotland greater democracy and a fairer and more equal society, which is not controlled for the benefits of a few – all of which were values advocated by Hardie and the Labour Party.

For Labour voters seeking a fairer and more equal country, a Yes vote offers the only real opportunity of making that a reality. Independence offers us the opportunity to decide for ourselves what our priorities are and how we intend to achieve them, instead of being governed by Westminster Governments that sacrifice our interests time and time again.

Interestingly, former Prime Minister, John Major has confirmed that at least one Labour MP will be voting yes, as will a number of others. I wonder if local MP Gordon Banks is one of these? Will he like 40% of Labour supporters take this chance of a lifetime to defend the welfare state and our NHS, to prevent 100,000 more children being pushed into poverty because of Westminster austerity, to get rid of Trident nuclear weapons instead of spending £100 billion on new ones, and defending a Westminster establishment that works for the few - and shows contempt for the needs of the many?
