SAUCHIE Juniors travelled to Broughty on Saturday for an East of Scotland cup tie. The Tayside club had been struggling in the Premier league and looked to shut up shop against their Super league rivals. Sauchie finished the game with ten men for the second time in a row and failed twice from the penalty spot to allow the home side to advance via the penalty shoot-out.

Fraser Duncan started with Steven Dolan, Steven Rennie, Jon Tully and Iain Syme as a back four with Brian Morgan taking the place of Alan Comrie in the starting line-up.

Sauchie dominated the match but it is goals that win matches and Sauchie came up against a strong defence complete with a goalkeeper on form.

Darren Cummings and Stuart Love were proving a handful for the home defence with Lee Bertie and company shutting up shop against the lively pair.

Syme broke up a home attack and moved forward pushing to Cummings who in turn found Grant Plenderleith with Love turning home the cross in 18 minutes for the opening goal.

Plenderleith was positive going down the right with his speed and crosses causing problems in and around the Broughty box. Cummings then moved into the box with Jordan Timmons impeding his path inside the box with Mr McIntyre booking the striker for diving.

Cummings then darted to the by line and cut back to Morgan with his placed effort carrying just over. Adam Bonar then moved forward from a deep position and let rip from 20 yards with the shot being parried by Darryl Burns in the home goal with Love first to react to knock home the loose ball. An offside flag nullified the score much to the bemusement of the Sauchie support.

It was not going to be the last strange decision the men in black would make.

Sauchie are not a dirty side yet pick up bookings for the softest of tackles and then players tread a tightrope, whilst other teams' players get a warning for similar tackles.

The second half saw more of the same with Broughty defending strongly and Burns making great blocks from shots by Love, Cummings, Purdie, Morgan and Burns.

A Morgan cross was charged down in the area by Gary Fraser with both hands on the ball with the referee waving away claims for a penalty even although the assistant had a clear view.

With fifteen minutes remaining Jon Tully received his second yellow card for a tug on Mark Brash just inside his own half.

Even with ten men Sauchie held the upper hand but could not get the ball into the net.

With it all square after ninety minutes it was on to penalty kicks. Cummings made no mistake with the first but Morgan blasted his kick over via the cross bar and the keeper pushed Purdies shot onto the post and saved. With Broughty scoring with every attempt they came out victorious.

Sauchie are at home this Saturday with Bonnyrigg Rose providing the opposition in a McBookies.com Super league match. Kick off 1.45pm.
