Dollar Golf Club It was a splendid day for the Ladies Greensome Open on Saturday with a good turnout competing in generally benign conditions.

It was a very sound 73 by Tricia Chillas and Margaret Tough to take the scratch prize but the round of the day came from the Dollar duo of Moragh Dunning and Di Dunning with truly stunning golf to accumulate an unbeatable 47 Stableford points.

Muckhart GC Muckhart Ladies Mail on Sunday team have won their last 16 tie to be the only Scottish Club to reach the quarter finals of this national tournament. At a sun kissed Muckhart the home team beat Cardross 4-1 to march forward to the last stages of this major competition. Resplendent in their new team outfits the girls were always in command during the tie with a number of big victories. This is a tremendous achievement and congratulations go to all team members over the last 9 rounds. We await news of the next opponents with interest, but on this form the girls will fear no one, and will be right up for the challenge. The good news just kept on coming this week. First up on Friday our Junior Scratch Team reached the final of the Under 18 Perth and Kinross Junior Team Championship, overcoming a 2.5-0.5 first leg away defeat at Auchterarder by winning the return leg 3-0 with a very young team of Andrew Thornton, Finlay Hamilton and Jamie Fulton. This was a magnificent comeback and the team look forward to the final at Blairgowrie against Strathmore GC in September.

Not to be outdone the Junior Bell Trophy team then won their semi final on Sunday by beating Blairgowrie 3.5 to 1.5. Their final will also be played at Blairgowrie against Craigie Hill and the team of Jamie Roberts, Finlay Hamilton, Andrew Thornton, Gareth Hutchison, and Jamie Fulton should be very proud of their efforts.

The club’s flagship Stewart Open for low handicap players took place on a very calm Saturday but despite the benign conditions scoring generally was higher than expected. Home player James Barrett was a notable exception though, winning the trophy by 3 shots with a superb one under par 70. Birdies at 4 and 9 had James out in 33 and when another birdie putt dropped at the long and difficult 12th, a very low score looked on. However dropped shots at the difficult 14th and 16th eventually brought James home in 37 for his winning score of 70.

Second place went to Michael Stokes of Cawder with 73 while Ross Hepburn of Hayston and previous winner Michael Campbell of Gullane were next on 77. Handicap prize went to home player Douglas Francis with a net 69, followed by Robert Russell of Muckhart on net 71 and David Clelland of Bothwell on net 72. Those players who sometimes skip on the birdie 2 sweep should perhaps reconsider in future as a dearth of birdie 2s at the designated holes resulted in Gilbert Hepburn of Whitemuir scooping the whole pot of £264 with his 2 at the 3rd. Other club news: Wednesday Medal winner was Colin Symmons with a net 68, Junior Eaun Duthie won the Kumasi/Wanliss Round 3 also with a net 68, while Jane Black’s net 71 pipped Maria Symington and Christine Laing by 1 shot to win the SLGA Medal. A correction also to last week’s news where the ‘cub reporter’ got his trophies mixed up. The Hogg Salver is not a senior’s trophy but in fact a Scratch Trophy played in conjunction with the Tennent Cup and the winner last week was in fact Neil MacDonald; sincere apologies Neil.

The week ahead sees us back to club competitions and with the courses in superb condition we look forward to some more great competition. Members are reminded of forthcoming social events; a quiz night on 29 August and swinging 60s and 70s night on September 12th, while the club Open Day date has just been confirmed as Sunday 27th September. More details will be published in the coming weeks as to the format of the day and offers to new members.
