Alloa boss Danny Lennon says everyone at the club is working hard to turn around their poor start to the SPFL Championship season.

The Wasps sit at the foot of the table and are yet to record their first point of the campaign as they get set to host newly-promoted Greenock Morton to the Indodrill Stadium this weekend.

But the gaffer is full of confidence that his players can produce a performance that their supporters will be proud of.

Lennon told Advertiser sport: “Everyone at our club is working ever so hard to get things right on the park. We want more than ever to produce a result and performance that our fans can be proud of because they make so many sacrifices to support the club through thick and thin. We want to put things right for them and we will give it our all to achieve that. We analyse every game to assess what we did right and to learn what we can do better or improve on, but I certainly believe after last week that things are close to clicking for us.

“Football at this level is all about fine margins, but I am confident it won’t be long before we are putting points on the board. I certainly believe the harder that you work then the more results will go for you and that fills me with confidence because the players and coaches work incredibly hard every week to improve. We are all surprised and disappointed by the start we have made to the league so far, but that is behind us and what we do have is a hungry group who are looking forward to putting things right for us. Iain Flannigan is out injured and is big miss for us because he had started the season so well, but he is progressing well and we hope to have him back over the next few weeks.” Lennon was in attendance as Jim Duffy’s men gave Renfrewshire rival St Mirren a fright last weekend in their 0-0 stalemate and admits he was impressed with what he saw.

But the Wasps boss now hopes his men can learn the lessons from their defeat at Raith and look to build on the positives heading into another crucial clash.

He said: “I watched Morton last week against St Mirren and they look very lively from middle to front with the two wide players and it is almost an old-fashioned wingers style they have with McLuskey and Barr. I felt they were very unlucky not to beat St Mirren then they go and have a superb win down at QoS in the cup. They are a very hard working side and so they will come with a lot of confidence into the game.

“The Raith game was very much a game of two halves. In the first, we looked like the side I want us to be. We defended very well, created several good chances to score and looked very compact. We have to look capitalise on that sort of pressure in future, but I was encouraged by how comfortable we looked in possession. If we take some of those chances then I feel we would’ve been looking at a very different result. We gave ourselves a great platform at half time to go on and take something from the game, but instead we go and concede a wonder goal. Unfortunately, that completely changed our mentality. We stopped doing the things that had got us success in the game and ultimately that’s where we lost the game.” The former St Mirren gaffer admits he is constantly on the lookout for new faces as he craves an additional striker to complete his squad, but after a failed attempt to bring Aberdeen youngster Lawrence Shankland to the club, he insists he will only move for the right player.

Lennon added: “We are always working behind the scenes, in terms of additions, but there is nothing concrete at the minute. The right player would have to come along and it is difficult to get those because they are always in high demand. I spoke with Derek McInnes about the possibility of getting Lawrence Shankland to the club, but he just felt that the boy would benefit more from the experience of being part of a full time club for the season on a daily basis to aid with his development so I totally respect his decision.

“Thomas Reilly was in training with us, but I feel that I have enough types of players like that in the squad already and we don’t want to just overload there for the sake of numbers. I would like another striker, but it comes down to who’s available and what we can afford.”
