The Clackmannanshire Ravens, the Wee County’s only American Football side, saw their historic first league season end in heartbreak as they crashed at the final hurdle in the playoffs.

The Ravens travelled to the capital to face the Edinburgh Wolves in the Junior semi final at Meadowbank Stadium last weekend.

The Clackmannanshire side received the ball to start the game but couldnt drive down the field against a strong Wolves defence and had to punt, but the Ravens defence also stood strong and the 1st quarter remained scoreless.

It wasn’t until midway through the 2nd quarter that the Wolves scored on a tipped pass to take the lead.

The game was dominated by both defences standing firm but the Wolves scored again on a long passing play to make the score 14-0, the Ravens came back in the 3rd quarter after Bailey Maclay to a pass and ran down the sideline only to be stopped at the 4-yard line before QB Will Underwood ran in for the score.

The Wolves came straight back at the Ravens and scored two further TD’s but yet again Will Underwood connected with Bailey Maclay who took the ball down the sideline to take the score to 22-12.

The Wolves added another TD shortly after to make the score 30-12 and played well to hold on for the win and advance to the final against the Highland Wildcats later this month.

A disappointed Ravens head coach Colin Muldoon paid trubute to his players and says their performance is a testament to how for the club has progressed since their inception.

He said: “Both teams played strong football especially on defence, but it just wasnt to be our day, We’ve came a long way from when we started two years ago, and i’m impressed with the way the players battled to the end and didn’t give up. We now have to move on and start to get ready for the MacMillan Fund game. The charity game, which we play for Alva Academy each year, is against the East Kilbride Pirates. It should be a very good game and hopefully gives us the chance to end the year on a high for a good cause.”
