Alloa new boy Robbie Crawford was delighted to play his part in the club’s first win of the SPFL Championship campaign after an eye-catching debut.
The versatile midfielder, who is on-loan from Rangers until January, admits he jumped at the chance to join the Wasps after speaking with manager Danny Lennon and his close friend Kyle McAusland.
The youngster revealed that Rangers boss Mark Warburton has urged him to grasp the chance of vital game time and he is hoping to catch the eye of the light blues boss during his spell in Clackmannanshire.
Crawford told Advertiser sport: “It was a really pleasing debut for me because it was a good team performance. We kept our shape well and limited them to very few chances so I thought we deserved the win.
“The clean sheet was just as important for us because of the confidence it will give us, but we created some good opportunities ourselves and did well with the ones we converted. It was an easy decision for me to come here to Alloa and it didn’t take me long to make my mind up because I wasn’t really involved much at Rangers.
“The move came about quite quickly because I only found out on Monday and I had signed the deal on Tuesday morning. I spoke to Mark Warburton and he told me to relish the chance to get out and get the experience of games under my belt so that is what I intend to do.
“I had a similar spell out at Morton last season and then managed to get back in contention at Rangers for the second half of the season and so hopefully I can do something similar again this term. I was impressed with what Danny Lennon had to say and by the way he wants to play the game so I am delighted to join and the Dumbarton win was the perfect start for us.
“I did phone Kyle McAusland to see what it was like here and he gave it a glowing reference. I know him well from playing together for so long at Rangers and so it is great to link up with him once again. It was really pleasing to play my part in the team’s first win of the season and I think you could see how much it meant to the players and the fans at full time. ”
Crawford hopes to emulate his Gers team mate Barrie McKay, who went from loan star last season to first team regular this term, but knows he will have to impress in a black and gold shirt first.
Alloa now head for the capital to face Alan Stubbs’ title contenders Hibs, and the 22-year-old knows he will have two sets of supporters hoping he can pull off a shock result.
He said: “Hibs will be a difficult one, but I think Rangers and Alloa will be looking for me to perform well in that one.
It doesn’t matter who the opponents are though, this team will compete as long as we take the same work rate into each game and if we do that then more results like the Dumbarton one will come. I think we throughly deserved it with the shift we put in and hopefully we can kick on now.
“I only have to look to Barrie, who did something similar to me with loan spells at Morton and then Raith before returning to compete for a first team place, so that is something I will look to do, but I will give my all for Alloa while I am here.”
The former Morton loanee is willing to play anywhere that Danny Lennon needs him to do his bit for the team, but admits he was ready to slaughter goal hero Eddie Ferns at the weekend for not passing, if he hadn’t hit the net.
Crawford added: “I was going crazy at Eddie for not squaring it because I had made up 60 yards to get there for a tap in, but luckily he got away with it by finishing well.
“If I could choose, I would prefer to play in the middle, but I am happy to play wherever the manager needs me. I felt like I put in a good shift against Dumbarton and I was happy to help the team.”
