ALLOA native Wallace Menzies was the star of the weekend after a double race triumph as the penultimate round of the British hill climb championship was played out in glorious late summer sunshine at Prescott in Gloucestershire.

Despite delays in racing from spin-offs and an area power cut in the morning, the organisers managed to get racing back on schedule through a typically big entry list in good time by dispensing with the lunch break, and as well as the usual stirring run-off action, a good crowd watched some great racing which included five new class records.

The first Sunday run-off was won by Menzies with a 36.20s under the tightest of margins ahead of Summers who had qualified first on Saturday with a new class record and Trevor Willis . The top three was separated by less than half a second. The ‘run-offs’ are the top twelve cars from the days heats, which get to compete again for top championship order.

The No. 7 car of Menzies is a 3.5L V8 powered Gould-NME GR55B built specifically for hill climbing. It’s the first time Wallace took double run-off wins of his career and for the car also shared with Tom New. If you haven’t heard of, or seen hill climbing before its one of the oldest forms of racing in the UK, were drivers take turns to go up the hill setting best times rather than racing for ‘on-track’ position. It’s very much a test of man and machine with narrow track and little-to-no run off.

In the afternoon run-offs in the last but one to race, Menzies was unstoppable coming first again with the fastest time of the day and season for the Prescott track of 35.80s a truly great time for the 1227 yard course. This time Scott came 2nd with another close finish of 35.94, Wills coming in 3rd.

After round 15 of the championship, Alex Summers is the leader in the points with 225pts, and Scott Moran 2nd 187pts, and Wallace Menzies after these two wins is now 4th on 182pts.

The final round of the British hill climb championship is at the historic Shelsley Walsh 19 September.
