ALLOA swimming star Duncan Scott was recognised for his spectacular sporting achievements in the pool as he was awarded several top prizes at the end-of-year awards.

The student won the Sir Peter Heatly Trophy as he was named as the Outstanding Young Sportsperson of the Year at the 2015 Scottish Sportsperson of the Year Awards, with fellow swimmer and Scotland team-mate Robbie Renwick taking the top prize.

The Wee County swimming star was shortlisted alongside cyclist Grant Ferguson, para-athlete Samantha Kinghorn and athlete Laura Muir but managed to see off all three to take the prestigious title.

The 18-year-old, who has recently begun studying at Stirling University, was delighted to have won the award and was proud of the success he has enjoyed this year.

The Clackmannanshire native admitted that his sights are now firmly set on securing a place in the Great Britain swimming team for next year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

He said: “It’s a huge honour to be awarded the Sir Peter Heatly Trophy. There was huge competition and some absolutely great athletes nominated so to win is fantastic.

“This year has been a great ride, starting at the European Games in Baku with six medals. I then took that confidence into the World Championships, my first senior cap for Great Britain, and it was an unreal experience. It was great to be part of the winning relay team. With my swim in the heats and the guys swimming so incredibly well to beat the Americans in the final it was great to come away with that gold medal. I think I can take that forward into my future career. With medals at Worlds and at the Commonwealth Games last year I hope it continues like that. Making Rio 2016 will be the biggest challenge yet but I think it’s definitely on the cards.”

The youngster's achievements come after he won six medals, three of them gold, at the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, earlier this year.

He followed that up with a successful trip to the World Swimming Championships this summer, winning a gold medal for his swim as part of Great Britain's four-man 200m relay freestyle team, along with fellow Scots Robbie Renwick and Dan Wallace.

The former Strathallan School pupil had also been a part of the Scottish swimming team for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which were held in Glasgow last year.

As well as winning the Sir Peter Heatly Trophy, Duncan was also named as British Swimming's Emerging Athlete of the Year for 2015.

He also took the Todd Prize as Scottish Junior Swimmer of the Year for the third year running, and was named Scottish Commonwealth Awards Emerging Athlete of the Year.
