ALLOA star Kyle McAusland reckons they must focus on getting a result by any means necessary when Queen of the South visit Clackmannanshire

The Wasps gave as much as they got last weekened and put in a good performance for the second week in a row, but ultimately, they left Cappielow with nothing as Ross Forbes free kick was enough for a 1-0 win for the hosts.

Now the former Rangers youngster believes that because the first goal is so crucial in the SPFL Championship at the minute, they must go all out to get it this weekend as they look to bring a halt to their barren run of six games without a win.

McAusland told Advertiser sport: “We can't get too down about things because it is still very early days in the season. There is still a lot of football to be played and there are plenty of chances for us to fight our way back into form. Obviously, we want to get off the bottom and clear as soon as we can because the last thing we need is to leave ourselves stranded. The Queen of the South game is a great opportunity for us to get back to winning ways and we know it is a winnable game from the first game against them. We played well down there, but individual errors cost us that day and the score line certainly flattered them. It is just all about getting a result by any means necessary for us at the minute. You can have all the possession and shots you want in a game, but the only one that matters is the scoreboard at full time and that's what we need to rectify first.

“The gaffer has been drumming it into us to have a shot a goal when we can, but for some reason we still seem to be overplaying things or looking for that extra pass instead at times. That is something that we maybe need to be more selfish with and not be frightened to have a go. The first goal is so crucial in this league and more often than not it wins you the game so that is definitely something we need to improve on because we seem to be chasing games every week at the minute. It would be nice to see if getting that first goal would settle us down and give us the chance to grow into games better.”

McAusland bemoaned his side's luck after the defeat in Greenock, which came straight after a similarly unlucky defeat at home to Raith, but he believes they only have themselves to blame for not taking their chances.

He said: “It is a difficult one for us to take again. It is a horrible case of deja-vu where we keep saying the same things over and over again. It was an open game where we dominated for spells, then they dominated for spells and it always seemed likely that the first goal would be the winner. We are gutted because we know these are the type of games that we are looking to win. But when you are not ruthless enough and don't take some good chances then you pay the consequences in this league. It is an unbelievable strike for the winner, but it's a silly free kick for us to concede and those are the type of goals that go against you when you are at the bottom of the table.”

The 23-year-old revealed the frustration among the players at their recent run on the pitch, but says they are all more determined than ever to put things right against Queen of the South this weekend.

McAusland added: “It is definitely frustrating for us at the minute because we are playing well, but still losing games. It would be different if we were getting battered every week and in a way that would be easier to resolve. When everyone is chipping in with some decent performances then that is when it's hard to take. But we know we have the players to turn this around and we certainly won't be feeling sorry for ourselves. As soon as we get back on the pitch this weekend, we will be looking to put things right.”
