GUTTED Wasps hero Eddie Ferns hopes the players can use the disappointment of the defeat to Queen of the South last week as motivation as they head to Ibrox to face SPFL Championship leaders Rangers on Saturday.

The speedy forward played his part in some big performances against the Glasgow giants last season and he reckons the squad must look to that for inspiration as they face a Gers side reeling from their first loss of the season to Hibs last weekend.

The Alloa star was frustrated to see his shot come back off the inside of the post and bounce to safety last Saturday against QOS with the game evenly poised at 1-1, but he believes it is a sign that their luck is about to change.

Ferns told Advertiser sport: “On Another day my shot hits the inside of the post and goes in, but I guess it is just another one of those days for us. Nothing is breaking for us whether it be a pass or a shot, it always seems to be the wrong decision at the moment, but we are still confident that we have the players to turn this around. We are all in this together and ready to battle for everything we can get. I believe that when it does then we are due to give someone a real going over, but we just have to keep working hard until it comes.

“We know it will come and it would be great if it clicks for us on Saturday. We might just catch Rangers on an off day so you never know and we can take confidence from having the players in the squad who got two draws there last season. We have the chance to go and train on the pitch this week which will be a great experience for us and a chance to get used to the pitch. Ibrox is the type of places you want to play in as a professional and hopefully we can go there and put in a special performance. It is a big wide park that I think suits my game to a tee so hopefully I have done enough for the gaffer to give me that chance, but we will wait and see.”

Ferns was thrilled to get back in the starting eleven for his first start since August and he now hopes to have done enough to convince Danny Lennon to keep him there.

Graeme Holmes goal inside 35 seconds at the weekend was a special moment for the player and his team mates were shocked and delighted for him, but the former Drumchapel United star he says it proves that they have goals right throughout the team.

He said: “I was delighted to get back in the team and put in a good performance, but it is frustrating that we haven't managed to win the game let alone lose it. We have conceded to scrappy goals and that has cost us dearly. It is poor from us to let that ruin what was a good performance from all the boys and we are really gutted. We have worked our socks off to battle ourselves into a leading position, but then within seconds of the restart, it is undone. The goal looked a mile offside and the linesman is behind the play at the time, but that is just how things are going for us at the minute.

“I was shocked when Homer scored because I haven't seen him shoot in four years like that. It was a special strike and we were all delighted for him, but it is just ashame we couldn't make it count. We aren't concerned with the lack of forwards because we have goals right throughout the squad. A club like Alloa cannot depend on just the strikers, everyone needs to chip in and hopefully I can add a few myself.”

Alloa were paired with their old rivals Dumbarton in the third round of the Scottish Cup in last week's draw and the 24-year-old believes it is a tie they can be confident about progressing from.

Ferns added: “The Scottish Cup draw is a tough one and we were slightly disappointed to draw a team in our own division, but we can take confidence from having already won there and so hopefully we can repeat the trick again in that one.”
