WASPS man-of-the-match Jason Marr revealed how a more rigid defensive approach was the key to their crucial 1-0 win at Livingston last weekend.

The Alloa defender produced an inspired display in the club's first ever victory at The Lions' home, but says getting the three points was their only focus going into the game.

The 26-year-old felt it was his side's best defensive display of the season and he hopes they can finally now have a run of games with their strongest back four in place.

Marr told Advertiser sport: “We were delighted to grab the win and it could be the turning point for us now. We knew how big it was going in, we had to win it to keep in touching distance to St Mirren and Livingston so it was a real cup final for us. The league table looked a lot healthier in the Sunday papers last weekend, it's still not great being bottom, but we now know that we can get back in amongst it with a few results. If we can pull off a result this week then we are right back in it. We are happy that it is the club's first ever league win at Livingston, but we were just delighted to get the three points – that was all that mattered to us. Paddy knew the type of game it was going to be so he set us out to keep our discipline and shape as a back four. In previous weeks, we would've had Hamilton and Doyle bombing on from full back, but on Saturday we stayed rigid and focussed on our defending and I think it worked brilliantly for us. As a back four we were solid and I thought that setup played to our strengths as defenders. We have had a few injuries and suspensions so we have been unable to get that consistent and strongest back four on the pitch, but this result proves what we can do at full strength. Myself and Dougie have quickly formed a good partnership where we seem to compliment each other so hopefully now we can get a run of games as a back four now.”

Marr revealed how keeping Livingston at bay is a massive confidence boost for the whole dressing room and despite putting in a great shift himself, he was only concerned about putting points on the board.

He said: “I think the clean sheet is also massive for our confidence as a group. We live for clean sheets as defenders, but it gives us a better belief in ourselves the longer we can keep the opposition out. People always seem to write us off at this football club. They have done it for the last two or three years and we have proven them wrong and I certain we can still prove them wrong again this year. We know we're a good side, but we've been really unlucky this season. Hopefully now this result can help us to turn our season around and we can start picking up more points in the week to come. I was pleased with my own performance, but it was all about doing my bit for the team and the win was all that mattered.”

The former Falkirk star and his team mates now turn their focus to a clash with fellow strugglers St Mirren on Saturday and he sees it as a massive chance to get themselves back into the race for survival after looking dead and buried last week.

Marr added: “It is crucial for us to build on this now and hopefully we can get our home form up and running against St Mirren on Saturday. We went to paisley and drew with them so we have absolutely nothing to fear from them. We played well that day and so they will be coming here knowing they're in for a tough game. They also have never played on our pitch so we will have that advantage as well and hopefully we can capitalise on that with a win. It would be a strange scenario with them just losing their manager and so have we, but hopefully their heads will be down after the loss to Dumbarton because we are full of confidence and desperate to go and get the result.”
