ALLOA star Iain Flannigan says the Wasps will be fired up and on the hunt for three points when local rivals Falkirk travel to the Indodrill Stadium on Saturday.

The Wee County side are anxious to turn their season around as they sit rooted to the foot of the Championship, and Flannigan says they can kick-start their campaign with a win over his former club.

And he believes the 5-0 defeat Alloa suffered in the reverse fixture earlier in the season will have no bearing on the Wasps’ focus in the build-up to their tie with a Falkirk side who are pushing Rangers and Hibs hard at the top of the table.

Flannigan told Advertiser Sport: “I wouldn’t say we are out for revenge. Just now we need to start getting points on the board and that is where our focus is. The last game was a bit of a nightmare because we had a few injuries and things like that but we didn’t perform on the day and Falkirk deserved their win thoroughly.

“We know what we can do on our day but we need to do that more consistently. You can look back at any game but you always have to look ahead and take each game on its own merit. Falkirk are on a good run but we can’t control what they do. It is important that we focus on ourselves and look to get back to winning ways as soon as possible because we are not in a good position just now and we need to turn it around.”

Flannigan admitted the Wasps were frustrated after preparing for their Boxing Day clash with Raith Rovers only to see it fall victim to the weather on the morning of the game, but the 27-year-old says it means they will be even more fired up to gain ground on their relegation rivals.

He said: “We are looking forward to the game. We are disappointed that last Saturday’s game was called off because we had prepared properly for it but you can’t legislate for that. We will train well this week and get geared up for an important game. It’s one that we will be looking to win.

“It is now a case of looking at the rest of the season and picking up as many points as we can, and we are looking to start that on Saturday.”

The former Kilmarnock midfielder believes new manager Jack Ross is the man to turn Alloa’s fortunes around but says they have to be more consistent if they are to beat the drop down to League One.

He admitted the players must take some responsibility and urged them to pull together and do their bit as the Wasps look to secure a fourth consecutive season of Championship football.

Flannigan added: “We believe we can turn it round. The new manager has only been in a couple of weeks but since he came in things have been good. The boys have been enjoying it. We just need to take what we have been doing in training into games and get a bit more consistency into our performances and results. We have to pick up as many points as we can as soon as possible.

“We had the St Mirren game which was pretty tight and could have gone either way but we just didn’t take our chances, myself included. We found ourselves on the wrong end of a 2-0 but things have been better. The manager will be looking to get his ideas across as quickly as possible but it is up to us when we are out on the park to take responsibility. The only way we will get out of the position we are in is if everyone does their bit.”
