CENTRAL AC athlete Lucy Davison was on top form as she stormed to double gold medal success at the Scottish national under 15s championships at the Emirates Arena.

The 14-year-old from Auchterarder has already set several club records this season and led the long jump from the start extending her record by clearing 5m exactly for the first time ever in the first round.

Her lead was coming under pressure though with Irish athlete Lauren Callaghan jumping 4.96m in round three and Rachel Hunter from Law & District AC jumping 4.98m in round five to cut Lucy’s lead to 2cm.

With Lucy taking her final jump before her rivals she knew she would have no chance to respond if they improved further so would have to make sure.

Lucy dug in with her last jump leaping even further to 5.06m to extend her lead.

It wasn’t over yet though and there was a nervous finish as Lauren Callaghan produced an improved final jump but the distance came up as five metres exactly, short of what was required to match Lucy’s final jump meaning she was confirmed as the champion.

Lucy’s 5.06m jump is not only another club record, but gives Lucy her third gold standard on the club awards scheme this season.

There was no time to rest on her laurels though as Lucy went straight from her Long Jump presentation to the Shot Put event where she dominated from start throwing 10.24m in the first round then increasing her distance to 11.05m then 11.14m to win by nearly a metre and claim her second gold medal of the day.

Central AC had two contenders in the 60m hurdles with Katie Sharkey, who is top of the Scottish rankings after winning the Scottish schools and reaching the UK championships final in February, and Briagha Cook, who sits third in the Scottish rankings.

Both athletes have already won a Scottish title this season having been half of the Central AC team that won the Scottish relay title in February.

Katie comfortably qualified for the final with the fastest time at 9.34s in her semi-final and Briagha won through with a personal best 9.58s.

Their preparation for the final was not ideal though as due to a mix up at the call room, Katie and Briagha were left behind while the other athletes lined up.

It was only due to some quick action by their coach and parents that the race was held up for them to join the field. They did not let this put them off though as when the gun went Katie quickly established a lead which was never challenged to win the gold medal in 9.26s ahead of Rachel Broadfoot of Dundee Hawkhill who set a pb 9.43s for second. But Briagha set another personal best 9.53s to follow in behind Katie and Rachel and claim the bronze medal and ensure two Central AC athletes on the podium.

For Ben MacMillan it was a proud moment as he stood on a podium at a national championships for the first time ever.

The 14-year-old Stirling athlete has already smashed the club indoor 1500m record earlier this season but improved this again in his heat with 4:32.70.

In the final he stayed with the lead all the way to the finish only losing out in the final lap to Hamish Armitt of Giffnock North. However he was clear in silver medal position smashing his club record again with 4:24.86 minutes.

The time also earns him a silver standard on the club awards scheme and only just misses entering the Scottish all-time top 10 for the event.

The other half of the Central AC’s winning relay team, Abby Davison and Shona McLay, were both in action in the sprint events. Abby set a new personal best in her 200m semi-final to qualify for the final with 26.54s where she finished 4th with 26.66s. However with 2 of the medals going to English athletes she was 2nd placed Scot. Shona was also on form as she progressed to semi finals at both 60m and 200m with a personal best in the 60m of 8.51s and a near personal best 28.03s at 200m.

In the 800m Skye Henderson ran 2:25.77 minutes to qualify for the final where she placed 8th. Coirstaidh Ainsworth ran 2:27.96 minutes to reach the B final where she placed 3rd.

Elizabeth Thompson reached the semi-finals of the 300m with 45.86s and Daniel Bruce set a personal best 11.61s in the 60m Hurdles as well as coming close to his best in the 60m (9.00s) and High Jump (1.32m).
