ALLOA stalwart Graeme Holmes was delighted with his side's victory over Hibernian and says the three points were no more than they deserved.

The Wasps were rank outsiders to claim an unlikely victory but they stunned the promotion-chasers to end their Indodrill Stadium hoodoo, and the veteran midfielder says it was a case of good fortune finally going their way.

Holmes told Advertiser Sport: “It is a bit of a strange one with us having been relegated already but we are absolutely delighted. With Hibs it is always going to be a hard game but I thought we deserved it. In a lot of games recently we have not had the rub of the green but we got that wee bit of luck that we were due. We are delighted, especially beating a team like Hibs who are a very strong team.

“I thought the first half performance was good, especially in the opening half-hour. To play like we did, I think we deserved to be in front at that stage. The second half was a different story and we were coming under a lot of pressure because they are a good team. We are delighted to have rode it out and held on.

“When you are 1-0 you drop a bit deeper subconsciously. You are coming under a lot more pressure and you have to play a bit deeper. But we did have some good chances. Although we were defending a lot we still managed to look dangerous.”

Holmes admitted he was relieved to have helped the Wasps claim their first home win of the season and says he hopes it can help repay the club's fans for their support throughout the campaign.

He said: “We have spoken about it at different times and it has been mentioned in conversation that we hadn't won here all season but it's not really something that was on my mind. To go through a whole season not winning at home would not have been good enough. We have been relegated but this is something back for the fans. They probably won't look at it the same way as the other great results we have had over the past few years but it is something back for them. We have managed to give them a good day by beating a good team. Hopefully it is a bit of payback for the struggles they have watched.”

The 32-year-old admitted that the squad are now playing for their futures and says he is aiming to finish the season strongly with the aim of earning a new contract.

Holmes added: “We want to go and win all three games. People might say that's not realistic but anything can happen. There will be a good atmosphere against Rangers with them getting the trophy. It will be a great game to play in. We will have nothing to lose. Against Dumbarton on the final day, you never know what it might mean to them. We have good chances to win. We are playing for contracts now. We are trying to impress the gaffer and win new deals so I don't think there will be any boys resting on their laurels or taking things easy. We will be pushing to try and win those games and finish on a high.”
