ALLOA swimmer Duncan Scott will find out this week if he has does enough to realise his dream of making the Team GB squad for the Rio Olympics this summer.

The talented teenager, who trains at Stirling University, relished the test of the Olympic trials last week and made his mark by becoming British champion as he claimed gold in the 100m Freestyle. Scott followed that up with an impressive bronze medal as well as a new personal best in the 200m Individual Medley before also giving himself a chance of selection in the 4x200m relay with a fourth place in the 200m freestyle, but it may still not be enough and he now faces a nervous sweat ahead of the Olympic Swim team selection announcement on Thursday.

That 4x200m relay squad, featuring Scott, won World Championship gold last year in Kazan, and that route now once again looks like his best route to make it Rio.

And despite going under two minutes for the first time in the 200m medley, finishing third in 1:59.88, Scott felt he had more to offer.

He said: “I’ve not swum that individually in quite a while in a major meet. I was quite happy with that, but the idea was that I could try to get down to a 1:58 time and challenge the two percent. I’m a little bit disappointed with that time, but it’s a PB so I’m going in the right direction. The team is starting to take shape and I want to be a part of it. I’ve felt quite relaxed about it. To get to Rio was the aim coming into the competition so I’m delighted to be in the mix, but it’s all down to the selectors now.”

Scott could not hide his own disappointment after finishing fourth in his favoured event, the 200m IM, but the result does put him in the frame for a relay spot.

However, the man himself played down his hopes of making the team.

He said: “I’ve finished two places higher than I was last year but I should have been quicker in the final. It was a tough race, and it’s actually a bit of a relief coming fourth. I wanted to challenge them and I don’t think I did that. I just need to keep doing what I am doing, and one day I will get there. It would be massive to go to the Olympics to race against the very best in the world but I don’t think that is going to happen this year now. I wanted to be here to show why I should be on that team and I haven’t really done that.”

Meanwhile, Scott's team mate and Team GB veteran Robbie Renwick has backed the Wee County talent to make the team, but says regardless of the outcome on Thursday, he still has a bright future in the sport.

Renwick added: “Duncan has got so much potential, I train with him every day and he’s a real star of the future. His technique is just fantastic and who knows where he is going to be.”

Duncan's next event is the European Aquatics Championships May 9-22 – the biggest event to be held at the London Aquatics Centre since the 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games – tickets are now available here: www.euroaquatics2016.london
