Former Alloa RFC star Kevin Bryce is hoping he can stake a claim for a place in Edinburgh's starting lineup following his move from Glasgow.

The Scotland international will make the switch along the M8 at the end of the season and admitted it was a difficult decision to leave Scotstoun after three seasons.

However, the forward is excited for the future and says he can't wait to get started at Murrayfield, writes Jamie Hall.

Bryce told Advertiser Sport: “I am very happy to be joining Edinburgh. It is a good chance for me to get involved with what they have got to offer. I want to try and get some more game time under my belt. I was quite unfortunate at Glasgow because I had a lot of injuries which meant that I never really got a run in the team.

“I will miss all the boys at Glasgow. The club has a fantastic setup with the coaching and backroom staff. There are a lot of people working away in the background to make the players' lives easier. Glasgow picked me up and Gregor Townsend offered me a contract three years ago now. I'm lucky to have been involved with the club. Having won the championship last year, we have a good chance to do it again this year so to be involved with a club like that is pretty special.”

The Alloa native is hoping that the move, coupled with a change of position, can help him force his way back into Vern Cotter's Scotland squad after he appeared at last year's World Cup.

Bryce said: “It does feel like I am taking the next step up in terms of my career. I've just changed positions from hooker to tighthead prop, which is one of the more technical positions on the park, and I've got a lot to learn in a short space of time before I join Edinburgh so I am working hard with the boys at Glasgow who have all been giving me some good advice.

“I had a chat with Vern Cotter during the World Cup and he kept asking me if I had ever played at tighthead before. It became more and more apparent that it was going to suit me. There are also not a lot of tightheads about so I'm hoping I'll be able to get a run of games for Edinburgh and eventually push on and play for Scotland again. I'm really looking forward to the challenge. Edinburgh obviously have WP Nel who is a fantastic tighthead. He is Scotland's starting tighthead and is a potential Lion so if I can ever be as good as that I will be delighted.

“The goal is definitely to force my way back into the Scotland setup but I am a long way off playing at international level just now. I have got to focus on doing well with Edinburgh and getting a good pre-season under my belt. I have a long way to go but that is the ultimate goal, if I am ever good enough or lucky enough.”

Bryce was quick to congratulate his former club Alloa on their promotion from Division 2 Midlands, and he believes the club's future is bright under the stewardship of Henry Edwards.

He added: “The Alloa boys have done really well this season. Henry Edwards is a really good coach for them and he is working wonders, not just with the first team but with the young boys coming through as well. He has done a great job and the boys are lucky to have him. They have all done really well. Things are looking promising for them.”
