Wasps Community Club’s Under-16’s have won the privilege of representing Scotland in the Coalfields Home Internationals against England and Wales in August.

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust organised their Coalfields Community Cup knock-out competition at the Indodrill Stadium on Sunday (June 26) as a selection process for the Home Internationals.

The Wasps A team lost out to Benarty Astros in a penalty shootout, after the final ended in a draw, but that result was good enough to get them their Scotland places.

The Wasps A team sheet was: Sam McGee, Tylar Adamson, Brandon Denkaat, Josh Shanks, Jake MacLean, Jacob Monk and Jamie Lee.

Betty Anderson 13, was the only girl in the competition after being drafted into the Wasps B team and played so well she won the Player of the Tournament title.

Wasps coach David Christie, said: “Our lads were disappointed at losing the Cup competition by the narrowest of margins, but they are thrilled at going on to represent Scotland”.

Benarty coach Martin Duff was equally delighted. He said: “This is a fantastic result and I couldn’t be more happy for such a great bunch of lads.

“It’s tremendous to see a team from a wee place like Benarty win this competition, and unbelievable that they will now go on to represent Scotland - but they deserved it all the way.

The Benarty Astros team sheet was: Reece Thomson, Cameron Duff, Kenny Wilson, Ben Whitehead, Josh Doyle, Rory Ferguson, Kai Baxter and Ross Moran.

Peter McNestry, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust Chairman who travelled North specially for the event said: “It was great to see how much all the competitors enjoyed the event, and I was very impressed with their skills and sporting spirit.

“Taking part in a competition like this and going on to represent your country really helps develop the character, and it was good to see their family members turn out in force to support them”.
