GOAL hero Greig Spence hope to build on his first competitive goal of the season after he set Alloa Athletic on their way to a 4-0 win over Cove Rangers in the Betfred Cup.

The Wasps' striker reckons it was a complete team performance and the fact that they had four seperate goal scorers on the night is something he feels could be vital for them over the course of the upcoming campaign.

Spence told Advertiser sport: “I am delighted with our performance and that we could get off to a winning start. I felt like we played some decent stuff and Cove Rangers posed us with a decent test as expected, so to score a few goals and win the game in the manner we did was very pleasing.

“I think the gaffer has got us playing some nice football and even the boys who came on off the bench were able to contribute – that shows the strength in depth and quality we have at the club this season – and that is exciting for us going forward.

“It is great to have goals right throughout the team because I think we will need that over the course of a long season. I missed a few chances in the Cove game, which isn't like me, but hopefully the confidence of getting that first one will help me to hit the ground running now as I get sharper.”

Spence and Alloa now turn their focus to Saturday's trip to face their next opponents Montrose as they look to maintain their 100% record in Group D of the Betfred Cup.

The former Celtic trainee is confident there is still more to come from the squad, but admits he is wary of the threat from the Angus side after two good performances in their opening games.

He said: “It is now just a case of so far, so good and we can now move onto Montrose full of confidence. We will look to keep things going and keep on stepping things up another level to peak for the start of the league campaign. We know the Montrose game will be a difficult one because they have a few decent players, but we will go there and look to win the game.

“We know it won't be easy because they have already pushed Ross County and Raith to the limit in their first two games. We will have to be alert, but if we play to our best then I would be confident of getting the win.”
