ALLOA claimed another impressive cup scalp last night after ditching Inverness out of the Betfred League Cup.

A first-half goal from defender Jason Marr was enough to overcome the Premiership side, who failed to stage a comeback at the Indodrill Stadium.

The victory means the Wasps maintain their 100 per cent record in the revamped competition, losing just two goals their last six.

Manager Jack Ross praised his players' endeavour and character as they look ahead to the new season with a ground-swell of confidence.

He told the Advertiser: "I am delighted with the result, but especially for the players. They are the ones who go out their work as hard as they do to win.

"I think a lot of people still forget that these guys actually put in a full shift before they even play.

"They're not here for money or fame; they are here because they love to play football.

"Demands are high, and sacrifices are made, but nights like last night make it all worthwhile.

"I want these guys to continue to trust themselves as much as I trust them. They should believe they are a good side, because that's what they are."

Since taking the reigns at Alloa, Ross has claimed a number of eye-catching results, including victory over Hibs, a draw at Ibrox, and, more recently, a league cup win over Ross County.

While, the gaffer admits last night's win at home to Caley is among one of the best results of his tenure, he insists he won't resting on his laurels.

Nevertheless, he will be taking some heart from the fact his side have kept five clean sheets from six, while scoring a total of 15.

Ross said: "As a manager, you'll find your attention will quickly turn to the next game. But it is a significant achievement for the club and for the players.

"Yes, it does bring us more and tougher fixtures into our schedule, but winning games like this breeds confidence and self-belief.

"The cup, so far, has been fantastic for us and has gone as well as it could have.

"Our defensive record has been oustanding and we have brought in a few attacking players to help us score goals.

"It's all about getting that balance - from the back four to the front line. It's as close to perfect as you can get in football sometimes, so we just want to make sure we can keep the run going as long as we can."

The Wasps find out their next round opponents this evening, with the draw taking place live on BT Sport after the Celtic v Motherwell tie.

And while Alloa will likely be handed another tough fixture, Ross believes he and his players should have nothing to fear in the quarter finals.

The manager said: "It's fantastic to be in the draw - the Alloa fans will no doubt be as excited as I will be to see who we play.

"I'm sure all those left in the competition after tonight will be desperate to get us in the next round. We know we will be going in to the game as underdogs.

"But whoever it is, we will be looking to win the game. There's no point in us saying, 'we've made it to the quarter finals', and not do everything we can to make the semis."
