ON-FIRE Wasps hitman Greig Spence reckons their first half display in the 5-2 win at Stranraer last weekend was one of the best he has ever been involved with.

The manner of the victory will have sent reverberations throughout the rest of League One after toppling their promotions rivals in their own backyard, but the ex-Celtic trainee was just as pleased with the way they rolled their sleeves up to see the game out in the second half.

The win coupled with their eye-catching start to the season has turned heads up and down the country and the fans’ favourite reckons it will now have made them targets for the rest of the division.

Spence told Advertiser Sport: “It’s a great win for us at a tough venue. Obviously, going 1-0 behind so early was a shock to the system because it is the first time we have been behind this year.

"But the reaction from us was incredible. In the first half, we simply blew them away and it’s the greatest 45 minute performance I have ever been involved in.

"The boys were full of confidence, zipping the ball about, we took our goals well and had even more chances so it could have been even more and we are delighted to get the win.

“We always knew they were going to get a few words said to them at half time and to their credit they came out flying and got a goal back, but it was more just trying to be professional and manage the game to see it out from our point of view.

"As much as we would have liked to pile bodies forward and go for more, it was important just to make sure of the win and see it through.

“It is no fluke why we are where we are. We are working our absolute back sides off week in and week out, in training and in games, so teams are going to have to match that to even get near us.

"We are keen to keep the momentum going, but we are a scalp to teams now. Teams are looking at us doing well and it is a big game for each of them to play us now, but we just have to keep doing what we are doing.”

Spence and attacking midfielder Jordan Kirkpatrick now have 11 goals between them in the seven competitive matches so far, but the in-form attacker is just delighted to see goals coming from right throughout their squad.

He said: “We have goals right throughout the team this year which takes the pressure off of the strikers. It is great when other boys are chipping in though because the strikers might not score every week, so it is great to know we have that.

"Boys like Kirkpatrick, Flannigan, Cawley and even the likes of Jason and Andy at the back are a threat so they can all chip in.

“Jordan is obviously one ahead of me now so there is also that healthy element of competition within the group and the boys are all flying and enjoying their football.

"We will only get stronger the more we play together, we trust in what the gaffer is trying to do here and so hopefully we can continue to produce the same level of performance every week.”

The former Raith Rovers striker’s double helped fire Alloa to the top of the league on goal difference, despite rivals Livingston also maintaining their 100 per cent percent league record.

But he reckons the pressure is still on the full time outfit to live up to their favourites tag as a full time club in a part time league.

Spence added: “Obviously, both ourselves and Livingston have started the season really well, but they are full time and you have got to probably say that they are still the favourites.

"We will keep working away though and the manager has our ambitions drilled into us, so we will never drop our standards and hopefully we can keep it going.”
