GUTTED Alloa Athletic star Jon Robertson believes they only have themselves to blame after blowing a two-goal lead in the 2-2 draw with Stenhousemuir last weekend.

The energetic central midfielder admits Jim Goodwin’s dismissal did heap unnecessary pressure on them late on and gifted the Warriors a route back into the match, but he still reckons they should have been good enough to see the game out.

Robertson told Advertiser Sport: “It was a very frustrating result for us in the end. I don’t believe we were at our best today, but the quality we have in this side shows that we can produce results in those circumstances.

"We got ourselves a two-goal lead, but we just shot ourselves in the foot and a poor decision from Jim has cost us dear in the end.

“He knows himself that he put us under pressure, but even with 10 men we still created chances and should have been clinical enough to kill off the game. We created chances, didn’t take them and then got punished for some bad decisions.

“We are all disappointed because we should be able to see the game out at 2-0 even with 10 men because of the players we have in our squad.

"A point away from home though is never a bad thing and so we must just take the positives from it and move on.”

Robertson admits he is excited by this weekend’s clash with full-time outfit Airdrie as he is keen to see if they can live up to all the pre-season hype.

The former Ochilview star also heaped praise on his former gaffer Brown Ferguson and says he is the reason why the Warriors keep producing such remarkable comebacks in games.

He said: “You have to praise Stenhousemuir for their spirit in coming back. It is something that was instilled in the squad even last year when I was there.

“We were renowned then as a club famous for comebacks, but that spirit is reiterated from the coaching staff and Brown Ferguson in particular.

"They haven’t lost that this season and to comeback from two goals down is one thing, but to do it two weeks on the trot is impressive so full credit to them."

He added: “I am intrigued to see what Airdrie are all about when we face them this weekend. They have that full-time tag now and I am sure they will be fit and well organised as a result of that, but it is a game we are looking forward to.

“We are eager to get back to winning ways ourselves after two games without it. We are still going well though and last weekend was another game where we haven’t lost so we are eager to keep building an unbeaten run up for ourselves.”

The Wasps midfielder reserved special praise for striker Jamie Longworth who made an impact off the bench at the weekend, but he reckons the only thing missing now for the former Stranraer hitman is a competitive goal.

Robertson added: “Jamie has shown great feet and ability with his chance at the end to get himself into the position, but he maybe just needs a goal to get himself going again in the goalscoring confidence.

"It is a chance he would normally score and he did the hard bit right, but he maybe just needs that lift of a goal.

“He does a lot of good work away from the box and does a lot for the team, but I think if he gets one then he will go on a wee run.”
