South Challenge Cup, 2nd Round

BSC GLASGOW were dealt a blow by South of Scotland Football League side Abbey Vale as they exited the South Challenge Cup.

A deflected first half strike by Vale striker Graeme Bell proved to be the only goal, with the visitors twice denied by the woodwork.

Manager Mark Adams' brought in Ricardo Corrieri for Aidan Ferris, who missed out through illness, though Gary Redpath returned to the starting line up as he recovers from a shoulder problem.

Vale started the game defending deep, with a solid backline causing difficulty to the BSC attackers.

Arnault Bembo and Tom Woods attempted to test goalkeeper Stuart Alison from distance, but both efforts went wide.

Redpath came close after 22 minutes, after captain Mark Toner drove forward from defence and created space for full back Gerard Traynor down the left.

Traynor's cross was low and made it all the way to the back post, but Redpath's sliding effort cannoned back off the upright.

Bell gave his side the lead on the half hour mark, after a long free kick from Alison bounced down to him just outside the area. He drove in and took a shot, which deflected off of a BSC defender and in.

Robert Jones nearly brought BSC back into the game minutes later, but his turn and strike from the right hit off the same post as Redpath's earlier effort as it continued to not look like BSC's day.

Alison then had to be alert to punch away Jamie Cunningham's bouncing cross after Redpath, in the box again, had missed it.

Redpath had another chance as the second half started, but headed wide from 12 yards after a positive run from Corrieri.

Bell came close up the other end as he met a deep cross at the back post, but Joe Wilton was across well to keep it out.

BSC could have equalised from a low Woods corner, but no one attacked the ball and it sailed out harmlessly.

Vale looked to get forward quickly on the counter attack, with Dylan Cairnie having a chance after he found space at the back post only to header wide as they continued to defend deep and well.

Redpath did have the ball in the net, however, but the home side were saved by the linesman's flag.

BSC continued to press and probe but could not carve out the golden opportunity required and Vale held on for the win.

Mark Adams' side will now look to bounce back in another cup competition, as Scottish Junior Cup winners Beith Juniors visit the Indodrill Stadium in the Scottish Cup this weekend.

BSC: Wilton; Bowers, Toner, Bell, Traynor; Bembo (Duncan 55), Cunningham, Redpath; Corrieri, Jones (Beckett 74). Woods.
