A WEE COUNTY karate champion rounded a successful year off by winning a title for the first time and securing a trophy for his country.

Tillicoultry's Cameron Scobie, 20, won the Senior Kumite for the first time at the JKS Scottish National Championships two weeks ago.

More than 30 clubs from across Scotland competed in the open championships with groups joining from England and Denmark as well.

Adding to his success on the day, Cameron also brought the trophy home after winning his bout in a five-a-side competition between Scotland and England.

The score was tied at two each when Cameron entered the ring and won in a very exciting finale.

He said: “I feel fantastic, it was the first time I've ever won [the Senior Kumite] and it was a good feeling to finally win it.

“At the end of the competition we had a team fight – Scotland versus England. It's a five man team that goes up and it was two-two.

“I was in the last fight, fortunately won it, broke the tie and won it for Scotland – that was a very good feeling.”

He added: “It's always a good competition, crowd's always very up for it as well.”

Cameron's cousin and student Sam, 14, also had a brilliant finish to his year.

Adding to the growing collection of accolades in the family, he was crowned overall 14/15 Boys' Kumite Champion after the final leg of the Scottish Grand Prix at Wishaw.

Cameron said: “He's been brilliant this year. It's always good to see when your students do well and all the hard work he's putting in and all the dedication he's putting in to actually pay off is a good feeling.”

The competitions marked the end of the year for the karate-crazy family – they will be back in action when championships restart early 2017.
