GREIG SPENCE notched his 16th goal of the season as he rescued a point for Alloa on Saturday.

The striker was on hand to sweep home Kevin Cawley’s deadly ball across goal but he admitted that he wasn’t happy with his own performance.

Spence told Advertiser Sport: “Personally I was rubbish. I don’t think the game was great. I think they (Queen’s Park) just kicked the ball as far as they could.

“We didn’t put our foot on the ball at all or play the way that we can. It was just a rubbish game.”

The target man is his own worst critic and was relentless as he assessed his contribution in what was a third successive draw.

He added: “Obviously 16 goals before Christmas is good but it’s probably the worst I’ve played all season.

“I’ve got great support with three in behind me in Jamie, Kev and Kirky. I’ve had that support all season so I prefer being up there myself.

“We were on such a great run at the start. It’s just the last few weeks, three draws in games that we want to be winning. I think the players just have to hold their hands up because it’s not been good from all of us.”

The former Cowdenbeath striker refused to lay the blame at Jim Goodwin’s door for the team’s downturn in form.

He said: “The manager’s setting us up in a great way and he’s giving us that license to go and play. He instils confidence in us but right now we just haven’t been good enough.

“I was terrible and I need to be better. He (Jim Goodwin) puts a lot of confidence in me, a lot of trust in me and I appreciate that.

“It does bring the best out of me generally but obviously we need to start winning games now. The players are letting the gaffer down.”

The Wasps were leapfrogged into third by Brechin City, emphasising the importance of a win on Christmas Eve.

However, Spence admitted that every game in League One is a challenge and the team must rise to it.

He said: “Every game is hard. You see Queen’s Park gave 110 per cent and it’s hard to play against. We try and play football but you’re going to be up against it.

“Next week we just have to show a bit more heart, have a bit more confidence in ourselves and go and get the three points.”

The striker refused to be overly critical of the way that Gus MacPherson’s Queen’s Park had set themselves up and admitted that the Wasps must concentrate on their own performances.

Spence said: “As a striker it’s difficult to play against a team with five at the back but you need to take your chances.

“Obviously it’s brought them success. From their side it works, just look at where they are in the table.

“Queen’s Park were switched on. We try and play in the right way because we’ve got dangerous players but teams are sitting in. We need to be better to break that down.

“Livingston have won so that gap’s huge now. I think we need to forget about that and focus on ourselves.

“We need to try and go on a run. We need to get back to our best and do things the right way.”
