ALLOA player-manager Jim Goodwin was delighted to have made Stefan McCluskey his second January signing today.

The ex-Morton forward has moved to the Indodrill Stadium after a spell training with St Mirren following his departure from Peterhead.

And his new boss says the versatile 26-year-old provides a great option up front.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: “Stefan can play up front, as a winger or just off a main striker so he is another great attacking option for us. He gives us competition for places and will shake things up a bit. We want to keep everyone on their toes – nobody is guaranteed a place in the team and if you look at the squad, we have great competition in all areas of the pitch. We have great strength in depth and a good blend of youth and experience, so I couldn’t be any more pleased.

“I had tried to get him in when he left Peterhead but at that stage he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to play part-time or full-time. There were several other clubs looking at him but he has chosen us which we are delighted about. We have been working hard for a number of weeks on the deal so we are over the moon that he is finally here.”

Goodwin revealed he is happy with his squad but admitted he would be on the lookout for available players who he feels can improve his squad.

He said: “I will keep my ear to the ground and see what is out there. If there is a player who we feel will improve the squad we will do all we can to bring him in. There is a budget but the chairman and the board have been fantastic.

“I wouldn’t necessarily mind bringing someone in on loan. As a player I was never overly keen on loans unless I knew the player coming in, because it can be a bit of a gamble at times with kids coming from the development league. There are options there but I would need to have seen the player a number of times and have done my research on him because I am not willing to bring anyone in just for the sake of it.

"I am delighted with the squad I have got just now. If someone comes in between now and the window shutting then great, but I am very confident in the group I have got.”

The Wasps boss looked ahead to Saturday’s Scottish Cup clash with Dunfermline and says his players are optimistic of causing a shock.

He added: “Saturday is a huge game and it is one we are all really looking forward to. There is a real buzz about the place and the boys are excited. We are quietly confident that we can give a good account of ourselves and that we will be looking forward to the draw come Sunday.”
