ALLOA hitman Greig Spence admitted his side left it too late after their Scottish Cup dream was ended by Championship side Dunfermline in the fourth round last Saturday.

The striker netted in injury time to bring the Wasps within a goal of their opponents but it wasn’t enough as they lost out 3-2 at the Indodrill Stadium.

And he reckons if Alloa had scored a few moments earlier, it could have been a very different story.

Spence told Advertiser Sport: “To be honest I don’t think we got going until there were only about 20 minutes left to go. Dunfermline were already 3-0 up by that point, but once we had another striker on the park we started to cause them a few more problems going forward and we were able to get back into the game. But even when I scored I didn’t really think we had much chance of getting back level because we just left it too late.

"Maybe if we had scored five minutes earlier we would have had more of a chance of getting back in it but we weren’t able to break through them.”

Spence admitted the Wasps were left frustrated at being unable to play their usual game, but accepts that is part of playing against teams from a higher level.

But he believes his side were still able to hurt Dunfermline and says there were spells when they showed their attacking potential.

He said: “It was very frustrating because we are used to dominating games as we have been in the league. But when you are playing against a team from the league above it is always going to be a bit more difficult to do that. They dominated us for long spells of the game but when we had a go at them we showed that we can be dangerous on the attack. There were times when we played some really good stuff.”

The Wasps return to league duty on Saturday with a trip to Coatbridge to face Albion Rovers, and Spence is expecting yet another tough encounter.

He added: “Albion Rovers will be very difficult. You know what you are getting when you play them – it is a tough place to go and a difficult park to play on so we will make sure we are fully focused on that game this week. We will prepare properly and go again on Saturday.”
