Alloa RFC……………………. 34

Aberdeen Wanderers RFC…......8

BT Caledonia League, Division 1

Alloa maintained their unbeaten home record this season with what in the end was a comfortable victory over their Aberdeen opponents.

Heavy underfoot conditions dictated that this was never going to be a free flowing display of running rugby but the visitors started brightly and had Alloa under some early pressure.

Therefore it was a little against the run of the play when Mathew Duncan powered over from short range for the opening try.

However a simple move from Wanderers down the blindside soon put the score back level after 15 minutes of play.

The game was littered with handling errors, but Martin McKenzie ignored the wet conditions and sniped over for the second try from a quickly taken penalty and the same man sliced open the Wanderers defence for Alloa's third touchdown moments later. Lee Cairney landed both conversions.

Wanderers had pulled back three penalty points in between McKenzie's brace for a 19-8 Half-Time scoreline.

The second half belonged firmly to Alloa and again it was stand in skipper, McKenzie who provided the spark for a further three tries.

Immediately from the restart, he took another quick tap penalty that caught the visitors defence on the back foot and he released Matt Pope who galloped in for the bonus try wide out on the right.

Jamie Syme was making a welcome return at No. 8 and he capped a fine performance when he twice crashed through the tiring Wanderers rear-guard. Lee Cairney added a conversion.

Unsurprisingly, it was Martin McKenzie who was awarded the J&M Builders Man of the Match.

Alloa now have a month off before bringing their season to an end with a home fixture against Gordonians.
