MATCH-WINNER Andy Graham was delighted with his stoppage-time winner as the Wasps beat playoff contenders Brechin 2-1 at Glebe Park on Tuesday.

Graham admitted he had risked the wrath of manager Jim Goodwin in marauding forward from the back, but says he is relieved his gamble paid off.

And the big defender says the squad are thrilled to have picked up another crucial victory in trying circumstances.

Graham told Advertiser Sport: “A few of the boys were wondering where I was going but the referee had said there were only three minutes to go, so when I passed it forward I decided just to continue my run and see if I could make something happen.

"Fortunately for me the ball took a bobble which meant the keeper dropped it at my feet and luckily I was able to just stab it in

"I’m glad I scored because the manager would probably have gone mental at me for being out of position if I hadn’t. But I had to take a chance and thankfully it worked out."

He added: “We know we should probably have finished the game off in the second half because we had two or three really good chances at 1-0.

"When you don’t do that it can come back to haunt you and that’s exactly what happened. They scored from their only chance, but we fought back from it.

“It was a great result in the circumstances, because there were a few things that went against us.

"Brechin is a very difficult place to go at the best of times and the pitch wasn’t great. Then Neil Parry didn’t make it to the game as he was stuck in traffic.

"It is always hard going, especially with a midweek game when all the boys have had to take time off work to get to the game. But we came through it and in the end we picked up a really good result. To go up there and get the win was massive.”

Graham reckons the Wasps’ recent form shows that the momentum is with them and urged his team-mates to keep their good run going in order to catch leaders Livingston as the League One title race heats up.

He said: “At the turn of the year we had a chat with the manager and we set a target for the number of points we wanted to get. We are on course for that now and we are winning a lot of games.

"Even when we drew against East Fife, we knew that was a good result because they hadn’t lost to anyone except us in their last dozen or so games.

"It’s a reflection of how well we are playing that we came away from that one so disappointed. It shows the momentum we have just now and with two home games coming up, it’s really important that we keep that going and build on it for the rest of the season if we are to catch Livingston.”

On Saturday the Wasps host Queen’s Park at the Indodrill Stadium, and Graham says his side are in a much better position than when the Glasgow side last visited the Wee County.

He added: “Queen’s Park are a good side and they got a point last time they visited so we know they will give us a test.

"We have turned our home form around since then though, and even though they are a hard team to play against, the three points is the only thing we are focused on. Spirits are high in the camp.”
