GREIG Spence revealed he urged his teammates not to take their foot off the gas as they led Brechin 6-1 so he could seal a hat-trick.

Spence had been keen for a treble but had to be content with two goals as his side clinched second spot.

The Wasps’ top scorer took his tally to an impressive 23 for the season, but he admitted that he could have scored even more.

Spence told Advertiser Sport: “After the penalty I thought there was a chance of getting a hat-trick. The game died down a lot once we went three and four up. I was urging the boys to keep going but by that point we had taken our foot off the gas a bit. To be honest I am happy with the two goals and my performance overall.

“That’s me on 23 for the season but I feel like I should maybe have a few more. Since January I don’t think I’ve been firing on all cylinders. But I’ve already beaten last season’s tally which was my best ever. My aim for the rest of the season is just to keep chipping in with more goals.”

Spence says the squad are pleased to have secured second place, but urged his team-mates not to let standards slip in the final few games of the season.

He said: “We are pleased to have secured second place and it’s good to see that all our hard work over the course of the season has been rewarded in some way. But going into the playoffs sometimes doesn’t count for much, so we have to make sure we keep the momentum from this going into the final three league games and then the playoffs.

“We have had a good season so far but if we go into the playoffs and miss out on promotion it will probably be looked at as a failure. We are fully focused on making sure that doesn’t happen. We have one goal and that is to get promoted.”

Spence says it’s now crucial that the Wasps get their preparations right for the promotion playoffs and insisted that they will be ready for the make-or-break games.

He added: “Our goal throughout the season has been to get promoted and that hasn’t changed. Being in the playoffs makes it that bit harder but it’s now all about making sure we are prepared and being ready for when they come around.”
