MORE than 550 pupils from all Wee County schools competed at the annual Primary School Athletics Championships at Lornshill Academy recently.

NHS Forth Valley Just Giving sponsored the event for the second year in a row, with chair Fiona Gavine came along to support the event.

This competition is an opportunity for P6 and P7 children from primary schools across Clackmannanshire to come together and compete for gold, silver and bronze in various athletic events.

Pupils took the chance to compete in the 100m, 200m, 800m and 4x100m relay events, as well as the long jump, javelin, shot putt and high jump.

It is not uncommon for the odd record to be broken at an athletics event, but this year a number of previous bests were eclipses in various events.

In the track events, the county's P6 girls finished up with four records to their name.

Hannah Tams, from Menstrie Primary School, broken the 100m best with a time of 14.63 seconds, while Jessica Hanson, from Strathdevon, smashed the 200m in 31.36.

Menstrie PS took home another accolade as they turned in the best ever P6 Girls 4x100m time of 1.01:86, while Brogan McMillan of Redwell broke the 800m record with a finish of 2.51:06.

Elsewhere, P7 Cameron Morrison, from Alva Primary, recorded the best boys 200m in 29.46, while Rob Ferguson from St Serf's took the P6 Boys 200m in 29.66.

The final track record was made on the day by by St Serf's who finished in the P6 Boys 4x100m in 1.00:88.

There were also field records broken with Ian Harris, from Muckhart PS, throwing 7.46m in the P7 Boys shot putt, while Clackmannan PS' Emily Denney threw 17.1m in the P7 Girls javelin.

Adam Cruickshanks threw an impressive 11m 89cm in the P6 Boys ASN Javelin. Emma Blyth took gold in the P7 Girls ASN 100m with Jade McClaren claiming silver.

Throughout the day pupils were gaining points for their schools which contributed to the overall school and small school award, with points awarded to the top six finishers in each event.

The results were extremely close but Tillicoultry topped the leader board with 92 points, closely followed by runner up Redwell on 85 points.

There was little to separate the top two small schools therefore the award was won by both Muckhart and Banchory who finished on 14 points.

In order to recognise some of the fantastic individual achievements that took place on the day there was an award for Best Boy and Best Girl.

This year the best boy went to Rob Ferguson from St Serf's for breaking two records in the 200m and 4x100 relay gaining himself and his school two gold medals.

The best girl went to Hannah Tams from Menstrie for smashing the 100m record and also receiving a gold medal in the 4x100 relay.
