TWO Wee County bowlers have been selected to represent Scotland in major championships this summer.

Rebecca Craig and Eilidh Weir, both of Alloa East End BC, will take part BIWBC International Series and junior series, respectively.

Neither are stranger to Scotland call-ups, with both competing in a variety of events around the globe.

Both have been described as "great ambassadors" for the Clacks club, with Eilidh setting her sights on reaching the biggest of stages in the future.

The 14-year-old told Advertiser Sport: "I enjoy playing bowls as it tests my concentration and, even though I want to win, I just like to go out and enjoy myself.

"I have made some good friends in the junior section and from other clubs that I play against. Alloa East End is a great club with some great people – the best in the county.

"I felt really proud when being selected to play for Scotland at such a young age and want to continue to be selected with my ultimate goal to play for my country in the Commonwealth Games or even if the sport makes the Olympics one day."

Eilidh, who will contest the BIBWC Junior International Series on July 22-23 in Derry, Northern Ireland, developed her love of the sport since starting at an early age.

Her dad Gordon Weir, also club treasurer, said: "Eilidh got into lawn bowls at around the age of six through a friend who was a member of Alloa East End. Along with her sister, the two of them were really committed and started to play in club competitions with junior section in the central west league.

"Very quickly, Alloa East End had one of the best junior section bowlers in central Scotland. They won numerous competitions and titles and were quickly accepted into the club culture."

The Clacks youngster was successful in gaining a place in Bowls Scotland's regional academy, the organisation's pathway for development.

In 2016, at the age of only 13, Eilidh was successful in being selected to play for Scotland ladies under-25 team in Wales, and then selected for the SYBA under-17 Scotland team which saw them earn a convincing win over the England under-25 team in Edinburgh last year.

She also joined the ladies under-25 Scotland team at the four-nations even in Londonderry last summer and played for the SYIBA under-17 team in Antrim, Belfast, earlier this year.

More recently, Eilidh sealed her place at the Scottish Championships in Ayr, taking place this July, by winning the ladies district under-25 competition.

Rebecca, meanwhile, will represent her country in the seniors competition Llandrindod, Wales, on June 18-20.

Gordon said: "Becky Craig has played bowls for many years and is no stranger to the Scotland team, being selected on numerous occasions, and has travelled all over the world with them.

"A great experience for any bowler and some great success stories for our wee club in Clackmannanshire."

He added: "This is Alloa East End BC's 140th anniversary year and these two players are great ambassadors for the club, and a credit to themselves.

"We continually try to improve and promote our club and make it a family-friendly environment for everyone to enjoy.

"We work closely with Scottish disability sport as they use our club to play competitions at and promote the sport."
