DARYLL MEGGATT labelled Alloa the masters of their own downfall as they slipped up at East Fife last Saturday.

A second-half strike from the hosts’ Greg Hurst proved to be decider, but Meggatt felt that the Wasps’ errors contributed to the defeat.

But the defender is determined to put the result behind him and focus on looking ahead to a busy week for the Wee County outfit.

Meggatt told Advertiser Sport: “It was disappointing because obviously that’s now the second game where we’ve not got what we felt we deserved.

"At the same time, though, there’s no point in panicking because we didn’t play at our best, and they still didn’t cause us many problems.

"Any bother we did have was our own doing, from our slack play and misplaced passes.

“The first goal is always vital because it gives teams something to hang onto. It gives them the chance to set up with two banks of four and sometimes you have to revert to basic balls over the top, and that didn’t happen for us.

“We didn’t get going. We normally move the ball quickly and that didn’t really happen at all for us. But it’s important that we move onto the week ahead.”

Alloa face Dundee’s under-20 side in the Irn-Bru Cup on Wednesday evening before returning to league duty against Queen’s Park on Saturday, and Meggatt warned that the Wasps can’t afford to take it easy in either game.

He said: “We can’t take our foot of the gas on Wednesday because Dundee’s Under-20s will be as good as, if not better than, some of the teams in this league.

"Queen’s Park will be trying to get points on the board as well so it will be a tough week for us.

"We have to start playing the way we know we can and get things moving quicker. If we can do that I’ve got no doubts that we’ll start getting results.”

The versatile defender reckons Queen’s Park, who narrowly missed out on a playoff place last season, will be looking to take a scalp when they visit the Indodrill Stadium.

But despite his side’s poor start to the season, Meggatt urged his team-mates to focus on the job-in-hand and not on the fledgling League One table.

He added: “Queen’s Park will be coming to Alloa looking to lay down a marker. They’ll see it as an opportunity to climb the league.

"But we have to concentrate on ourselves, and if we do that we have a much better chance of getting the result. We are only two games in – we don’t need to start worrying about anything yet.”
