ALLOA defender Frank McKeown insisted that he got the decisive touch on the Wasps' first-half equaliser at Ayr United last Saturday.

The centre-back deflected Jon Robertson's effort into the net to pull his side level at Somerset Park, but several sources credited the strike as a Craig Reid own goal.

However, he admitted he is desperate to see it go down as his goal and reckons he would be doing Reid a favour.

McKeown told Advertiser Sport: "I don't score many so I'll definitely be claiming it. It was a good strike by Robbo and it just came off me. I made a move towards it and thankfully it went in.

"I'm sure Reidy won't want it going down as his own goal so I'm happy to claim it. It was definitely my goal, even if it did come off my backside."

McKeown admitted that the Wasps' draw felt more like a defeat after they went in front with five minutes left, only for Ayr's Lawrence Shankland to strike late and salvage a point for his side.

He said: "Having gone 3-2 up with just a few minutes to go, conceding the late equaliser obviously makes it feel more like a defeat. We are devastated with that for obvious reasons.

"Some people were saying we were a bit lucky to get the penalty when we went in front but regardless of that, when you go 3-2 up with five minutes to go you have to see it out and we weren't able to do that.

"We started really poorly and went a goal down early, but once we got going we were the better team late in the first half. We started the second half well and after that it was end-to-end."

Despite an inconsistent start to the season, Alloa are still within striking distance of the playoff places, and McKeown believes there is plenty more to come from his side as they look to mount a promotion push.

He added: "I don't think we have really got going yet this season. But we're still there or thereabouts, so hopefully when things really do come together for us we will be able to pick up more wins.

"It's not been the best start to the season but we're hanging in there. There's a lot more to come from us."
