SAUCHIE captain Brian Morgan reckons his side are right in the thick of a relegation battle after a tough start to their first season back in the Super League.

The Wee County outfit were beaten by Forfar West End last Saturday to add to their woes, and Morgan admitted that the squad’s confidence has been affected by recent results.

But the skipper urged the club’s experienced stars to step up to the mark and help turn their campaign round.

Morgan told Advertiser Sport: “We are right down the bottom now so we can’t be complacent. We are fighting for our lives already and although people will say we are only six or seven games in, those six or seven games last season won us the league.

"That spell will have a big impact come the end of the season, so we need to turn it round as soon as we can.

“There are only a few boys in the squad who have actually played in the Super League before, so the experienced boys need to step up and help the others through a bit more. It’s a hard league and you have to do the basics well. That’s what is letting us down now.

“We do still have a good spirit about us but you can’t say confidence isn’t taking a hit. The better you play the higher you are going into training.

"Some of us are turning up to games and not knowing what to expect. We don’t know what Sauchie team is going to turn up.

“Last year we worked really hard on one or two set formations and everyone knew exactly where they should be. This season we have changed shape quite a bit and with a few new boys coming in it’s very difficult. But once everyone gets settled in I’m sure we’ll do well.”

Morgan insisted that the players are fully aware of the importance of Saturday’s meeting with Dundonald Bluebell, and says they will be fully focused on putting in a good display.

He said: “You want to win every game you play and we understand how important this game it is. But we know how hard it’s going to be.

"They beat us in the cup last year but we have to focus on our own performance and make sure we have the right attitude going into the game.”

Sauchie have been boosted by the return of former captain Graeme King and striker Michael Wallace, and current skipper Morgan is hoping the new arrivals can be the catalyst for the Juniors to kick-start their season.

He added: “Kingy will be a great signing for us. He’s the kind of guy who can talk people through games and he’ll help the younger players out a lot. He’s an old-fashioned defender and that’s what we’ve been needing.

"Mikey has looked sharp and good on the ball so he will give us another attacking threat. Goals have been hard to come by so hopefully he can get the ball rolling for us up there.”
