WEE COUNTY swimming star Duncan Scott has been enjoying the battle for medals at the European Aquatics Championships in Glasgow as he keeps bagging podium finishes.

The 21-year-old collected a silver in the 100m freestyle final at the weekend and just 90 minutes later, he was back in the pool for the 4x200m freestyle relay final to take a gold with Team GB, setting a new championship record.

The Alloa swimmer, who became the most decorated Scottish athlete at a single Commonwealth Games earlier this year after Gold Coast, told BBC TV reporters the 100m event is “always so tight”.

Catching his breath after the race, he said: “It’s just always a pretty good battle and that’s what I enjoy – getting in there and racing.”

He came second behind Italian teenager Alessandro Miressi and spoke about the various strategies that can be employed to approach the short race, which he completed in 48.23.

Duncan, who mounted his rush for glory in the second 50m to fly home when many others blasted it out before the turn, said: “There’s a couple of different ways to swim in the 100m, people have had success with both – coming back faster and going out faster.

“As you can see now there are lots of different plans, each of [us] try and execute our [own] race.”

Duncan did not have much time to rest before he was back in the pool with team-mates James Guy, Calum Jarvis and Thomas Dean.

They finished in 7:05.32 to claim gold as well as a new championship record ahead of Russia and Italy.

Duncan told BBC TV: “We've shown good quality over the last couple of years in this event – world champions, European’s before Rio and the medal at the Olympics last time.”

He praised team-mates for their performances and “good execution”: Jarvis for a “great lead-off leg” and Dean for showing “great composure” in bringing the gold home.
