Tennent's Caledonia League Division 1

ALLOA narrowly missed out on taking the points in what was a dour struggle against neighbours Grangemouth.

The cold and wet conditions made handling an issue throughout with the flow of the game constantly being disrupted by the referee’s whistle for infringements that suited the heavy Grangemouth pack who dominated the set piece.

Rab Truesdale got the home side off to the perfect start with an early score, but the Stags replied with two of their own before a Marc Murray effort just before half time.

A quick tap penalty just after the break stretched the visitors lead to nine points, but Martin McKenzie replied with a quick tap penalty for the home side before Dale Foster picked up expertly from a retreating scrum before releasing Daniel Murrell out wide to edge Alloa in front by a solitary point.

But with 10 minutes to play the dangerous Grangemouth stand off broke free for what turned out to be the winning score.

Alloa exerted late pressure in the Grangemouth “22, but could not find a way through the resolute defence.

Alloa now make the short journey to face Hillfoots on Saturday for another local derby. Kick off at Tillicoultry is 2pm
