THE wait is almost over ... this Saturday brings the most attractive fixture for many a long day to Recreation Park.
Alloa Athletic will be hosts to Premier League boys Aberdeen in the fourth round of the Homecoming Scottish Cup, a fixture which is creating much interest in this area and in the north.
Ticket sales are booming as Alloa fans have been queuing up to make sure they do not miss this game and hoping the Wasps will manage to pull out all the stops and produce a shock result.
Match tickets for Alloa supporters will, as we go to press, continue to be sold this week at the ground, from 9am until 1pm, each day.
And in the north Aberdeen supporters have been quick to buy their tickets with the Dons" website intimating that their allocation is already sold out.
Alloa manager Allan Maitland is eagerly looking forward to this fixure, not because he is a self-confessed Dons fan from years ago, but because he wants his part-timers to do well against a top notch side.
He said, 'This is a fantastic tie not only for our team but for the club and the town. The last time we played a Premier League club we knocked Livingston out, so playing at home means there is always a chance of us doing really well and managing a good result.
'It would be a major shock if we could knock Aberdeen out. We will certainly be going all out to dump them and create a surprise. As a life-long Aberdeen fan, coming up against the team I have supported all my life will be strange.
'I was over in Gothenburg supporting the Dons when they won the Cup Winners" Cup and many of my family are Pittodrie season ticket holders. But there is no room for sentiment in football and we will be going all out to get a result.'
The manager continued, 'In a game like this if we could get the breaks then anything is possible. But I am well aware Aberdeen have many quality players and have won their last four games, not losing many goals.
'But if we can manage to play our own game it could be important for us. The tie will be a welcome relief from our difficult league run and we will be remembering how well we did in the previous Scottish Cup game against Raith Rovers. Yes, we will be giving our best for a good result.'
