DELIGHTED Wasps gaffer Jack Ross continued his summer rebuild with a double swoop for midfielder Jon Robertson and experienced striker Jamie Longworth.

The latest two arrivals at Alloa Athletic made it three new faces inside a week for the manager after securing the signature of talented midfielder Jordan Kirkpatrick towards the end of last week and now he believes his squad is starting to take shape nicely.

The former St Mirren star believes both of his new additions will have a big part to play in the coming season.

Ross told Advertiser sport: “It is no secret that we had problems last season in terms of scoring enough goals and we were limited in the striking department. Michael Duffy did really well for us and Issac Layne made an impact when he came back. Isaac is someone who I believe has the potential to do well in this division, but I was keen to bring in another two options alongside him and Jamie's arrival certainly gives us one of them. I think his goal record in the lower leagues throughout his career is excellent and so he is an exciting signing for us.

“By his own admission, he didn't have the best of seasons last term, but I think a lot of that was down to confidence with him not playing as much as he would like. I think we've convinced him that this is the right environment for him to rediscover that goalscoring form he has produced throughout his senior career and I am confident we will be a good fit. We had to work hard to get him, but now he is an Alloa player, I know he is fully committed to firing us towards promotion.

“Jamie is still only 28 so he is at a great stage of his career and with his experience and goals record, I hope he will be able to help bring on the likes of Isaac and Scott Hynd. He has a good football brain and is a good finisher so it is a big piece of the puzzle for us to secure his services.

“Jon is a player who will bring us a lot of energy in the midfield area. He is a player who likes to get forward so he is a different type of player to what we have already and hopefully he can compliment the players we have here already. Jon brings the experience not only of this league with Cowdenbeath, but he also has experience of playing in the top league with St Mirren. He will be another who comes here with a point to prove after a season that didn't really go the way he would have hoped so hopefully we can reap the benefits of that in the coming season with his hunger to do well for us.”

Ross was delighted with the capture of former Dumbarton star Jordan Kirkpatrick after fighting off a number of other interested clubs for his services, and he believes the young midfielder is still someone who could play at the highest level I the Scottish game.

He said: “Jordan is a top player and sometimes I don't think he even knows just how good he is a times so we are delighted to get him to the club. He is definitely a player who is young enough to work his way back up the levels again because he has all the ability to achieve it.

“He is a player who I enjoyed working with previously so I am delighted to get him in. I have always kept in contact with him and he was someone that I tried to get to the club on loan last January, but league rules prevented that at the time. He was a player I was always keen to bring in and to be fair to him, he is probably the easiest one to tie up such was his eagerness to come here, so he will be a big asset for us this year.”

The 39-year-old revealed he is still in discussion with the rest of his current squad and admits he would still love to retain the services of a number of his key players from last season.

Ross added: “I am still speaking to the likes of Iain Flannigan and Jason Marr and of course, we would love to have them back at the club. I should here back from them in the next week or so, but we would be hopeful we can get something done there. Talks with Burton O'Brien are still ongoing at the moment, he is someone I would be keen also to keep around if I can, but we will have to wait and see. One player who won't be returning is Mitch Megginson. He has moved back up to Aberdeen so just from a geographical sense he won't be returning next season and we wish him all the best.”
