ALLOA ATHLETIC supporters enjoyed a dream day at Beechwood Park last weekend as some of the club's most loved former players returned to face them in a fundraising match.

The game saw the return of former heroes such as Davie Beaton, Bomber Brown Ferguson, Craig Valentine, Dougie Wilson, Scott Walker and Graeme Brown to the famous Black and Gold colours.

Another Wasps favourite was in the dugout as former boss Gregor Able led the legends side while, the supporters team was led by match organiser and team manager Martyn Hammond, who even donned the famous Terry Christie duffle coat for the occasion.

A great afternoon in the sun-soaked surroundings of Sauchie Junior's home ground and fun was had by friends, family and supporters alike as the nostalgic trip down memory lane attracted a packed crowd inside the Jimmy Millar stand.

The Supporters club side, who have just completed their first season in the national league for supporters teams, defied the odds to hold the veteran stars to a goalless first half, and it looked like a shock win might have been on the cards when professional Boxing star Darin Reid smashed them into an early second half lead, but the legends team hadn't read the script.

A double from Bomber Brown and further goals from Scott Walker and Adam Johnstone meant the game itself ended in a 4-1 defeat for the supporters, but vital funds were raised for the club to continue in the league next season where they will even compete in the British Cup against club supporters from across the United Kingdom.

Organiser Martyn Hammond said: “I would just like to say a big thank you to a number of people who made this all possible. Firstly to Sauchie Juniors and Davie Beaton for hosting us. Davie was first class with us in helping organise the teams and even came to our player of the year night to hand out prizes so we cannot thank him enough. I would like to also thank Steve Preston of the Station Bar for his support for this and throughout the season through his sponsorship of the team. McBookie have now bought us 25 polo shirts for next season so we will actually look like a team when we travel to games so a big thank you to them.

“All the guys from the Alloa 1878 supporters club, they know who they are, but we really couldn't have pulled it off without them. It was great to see such a brilliant turnout on the day as well to come and watch us. Last, but certainly not least, I'd like to thank all the legends who came along and played. It was great to see them strutting their stuff in Alloa colours again and hopefully now we can build on this year's event and make this a regular annual event.”
