RETURNING hero Kevin Cawley says it felt good to back in the club's colours as they got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start with a 3-0 win over Fort William last weekend.

The skillful forward, who spent last season at Dumbarton, admits he is excited by the Wasps new forward line and he reckons there is much more still to come from them.

The back to back promotion hero believes there is still much more to come from the new look squad and says they will only get better the more they play together.

Cawley told Advertiser sport: “It was a great feeling to get my first game back in the Wasps colours and it felt like I have never been away. The first game is always crucial in pre-season and it allowed us to get a feel for the new pitch in a game scenario. I thought we played really well and could have scored a lot more goals. I had a few chances to score in the first few minutes and hit the post so hopefully there is much more to come on that front. It was good to get a win and I think it is a taste of things to come for us with so many attacking options in the team.

“There are so many good players at the club now we almost have a front six. Everyone is very technical on the ball and it is probably the most technical team we've ever had at Alloa in my time with the club. Hopefully now we can continue to develop together and gel as a team to take that into the season. There is much more to come from us as a team as we begin to understand how each other plays.

“I obviously know Greig Spence very well from our first spell here together and that understanding between us is still there, but I really thought we combined well with Jamie Longworth as well and so hopefully that can be a fruitful combination for us. I thought Isaac performed well also and got his goal which will do his confidence the world of good.”

The Wasps have been made title favourites for SPFL League One with the bookmakers after some impressive summer transfer dealings by gaffer Jack Ross and Cawley says it is now up to the players to handle that pressure and deliver on the pitch.

He said: “It is great to think we still have three quality players to come back in Jason Marr, Graeme Holmes and Jordan Kirkpatrick. I think that is an example of the great competition for places we have here now and that can only be a healthly thing for the squad. It keeps boys on their toes, stops anyone getting complacent and we will push each other on as a result.

“I think because of the team that the gaffer has put together here then there is no doubting people will see us as title favourites, and we have to handle that pressure now. We just have to go about our business quietly, take it one game at a time and see where it takes us. We will go into the season with the aim of winning the league and if we continue the intensity we have already shown in training then I think we will be in with a good shout.”

The 27-year-old is now looking forward to the club's double header with Dunfermline and then Dundee this as their pre-season friendlies are ramped up a notch in terms of the opposition and he is expecting a tough test from both sides.

Cawley added: “Dunfermline and Dundee games are good ones now for us to test ourselves and I think we need that level of test before we head into the League Cup. I expect them to be good games next week and especially Dunfermline, who I can see coming down with a bit of noise with them being newly promoted as champions.

“We also have a bit of history with them because we were the team that sent them down so it has all the makings of a good game. Allan Johnston will bring his team here looking to win, but we are out to make life difficult for them.”
