ALLOA match-winner Jon Robertson admitted his side rode their luck at times during their League One victory over Stranraer.

But he says the result proves the Wasps can approach the second half of the season with confidence.

The midfielder scored a second-half winner to complete a remarkable turnaround, and he reckons they have earned the slices of good fortune which saw them take three points back to the Indodrill Stadium.

Robertson told Advertiser Sport: “To be honest I think we got away with it a little bit. We weren’t at our best and it wasn’t up to the standard we expect of ourselves.

"But it’s wins like that which can define a season, and if you can grind results out when you play like we did, you have to be delighted with it.

“The gaffer simply told us to get our finger out at half time.

"Sometimes you get periods like that first half in football and all credit to Stranraer, they knocked it about well and we were nowhere near them.

"We let them dictate the game and they did that. We all knew what we needed to do in the second half and we did improve, but to be honest it was still not up to the standards we want to achieve.

“We do believe in ourselves and even though we have hit a bit of a bump recently, we’ve not lost many games. We’ve turned potential defeats into draws.

"Our big problem just now is that we are not quick enough out of the blocks and we are going behind too often, which we need to put right. Previous weeks have shown the sort of character we have and we showed it again.

"We maybe had breaks go our way at times but you need that in a season, and you earn it over the course of a campaign.”

Robertson proved to be the hero with his second-half winner, and he says he was delighted to score his first goal since the Challenge Cup victory over Bala Town.

He said: “The spin on the ball was kind to me and played it into my path so all I really had to do was get my head over it and keep it down.

"I’m not too renowned for scoring goals but I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet. It’s always nice to help the boys out when I can.”

Alloa’s victory propelled them into second place in the League One table, and Robertson is hoping for an exciting title race between the teams currently occupying the top four.

He added: “We have let Livingston get away from us recently but over the last couple of weeks results have started to go our way again. We will keep trying to put pressure on them.

"It is hard when you’re up there and there is a long way to go in the season with pressure on us every week.

"We still have two games to play against them, Brechin and Airdrie so it could be quite exciting going into the final stages of the season.”
